New Article from Clarissa: "p38 regulates the tumor suppressor PDCD4 via the TSC-mTORC1 pathway", where she identified that p38 regulates the tumor suppressor PDCD1 in macrophages via Tsc1 and Tsc2. Published in Cell Stress (12/2021)

mTOR-dependent immunometabolism as Achilles' heel of anticancer therapy

New Review from Clarissa of the lab: "mTOR-dependent immunometabolism as Achilles' heel of anticancer therapy", where we discuss that targeting mTOR in cancer will affect metabolic functions of immune cells that either support or subvert antitumor responses. Published in European Journal of Immunology (11/2021)

A fungal antigenic driver for Löfgren’s syndrome sarcoidosis

Insights commentary from Clarice on an interesting study from Sarah Greaves, Andrew P. Fontenot, and colleagues that identify a peptide derived from an airborne mold species that stimulates T cells of Löfgren’s syndrome patients suggesting that the fungus Aspergillus nidulans might be the elusive microbial agent that drives acute sarcoidosis. Published in Journal of Experimental Medicine (09/2021)

New FWF Grant awarded

Our laboratory has been successful to obtain another FWF Grant from the Austrian Science Fund to study the role of mTORC1 in intestinal diseases! (05/2021)

New FWF Grant awarded

Our laboratory has been awarded a new FWF Grant from the Austrian Science Fund to study granulomas and disease in sarcoidosis! (03/2021)

New SFB funded

The FWF has funded a new special research programme (SFB) focusing on "Immunometabolism". Our consortium consists of four research groups (Gerda Egger, Arvand Haschemi, Gernot Schabbauer and Thomas Weichhart) from the Medical University of Vienna. Elena Pohl works at VetmedUni Vienna. Participants from Graz are Martina Schweiger (Uni Graz) and Christine Moissl-Eichinger (MedUni Graz). Our lab will coordinate the project, which explores the metabolic maintenance of tissue integrity by macropahges.

Sarcoidosis and the mTOR, Rac1, and Autophagy Triad

New Opinion article from Clarice together with the lab of Alain Calender and Yves Pacheco: We hypothesize that defects in autophagy and mTOR-related pathways decrease the clearance of infectious as well as nonorganic particles and promote granuloma formation and Th17 differentiation in sarcoidosis. Published in Trends in Immunology (03/20)

Inverse Data-Driven Modeling and Multiomics Analysis Reveals Phgdh as a Metabolic Checkpoint of Macrophage Polarization and Proliferation

New study from Jayne and Moni from the lab together with Thomas Nägele and Wolfram Weckwerth! We show that that Tsc2 influences the metabolome of macrophages. Inverse data-driven modeling and multiomics data reveal that Phgdh is an Tsc2-mTORC1-dependent metabolic checkpoint of macrophage proliferation and polarization. Phgdh is required for the expression of key anti-inflammatory molecules and M2 proliferation. Study published in Cell Reports (02/2020)

Inactivation of mTORC2 in macrophages is a signature of colorectal cancer that promotes tumorigenesis

New study from Karl, Birgit and Stephi from the lab! We find mTORC2 activity mainly in macrophages but not tumor cells in colorectal cancer. And mTORC2 in macrophages protects against CRC. Study published in JCI Insight (10/2019).
